Boston's Top Employers By Industry Sector

In terms of employment, three industry sectors are dominant in Boston: Healthcare, F.I.R.E. (Finance, Insurance and Real Estate) and Higher Education. These three sectors make up for 78.1% of the city’s total employment.

Healthcare is the largest, contributing 41.6% to Boston’s total employment with top three industry employers being Mass General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Beth Israel Co. The three hospitals together employ more than 26,000 individuals. 

F.I.R.E. constitutes 28.9% of Boston’s total employment. “Four banks, four insurance companies, and four financial services companies employ more than 1,000 employees each,” according to the Boston Redevelopment Authority. The top three F.I.R.E. industry employers are Fidelity Investments, BostonBank and Liberty Mutual.

Higher Education comes in third contributing a total of 8% to Boston’s total employment. The top Higher Education employers are Boston University with 7,410 employees and Northeastern University with 3,186 employees.
