As I’m sure you’ve heard, the Massachusetts unemployment rate dropped 0.4 percentage points in March, down to 6.5%, and employers have added 30,000 jobs since January. Not only are we seeing entrepreneurs establish their companies here in the Boston area and recruit for the human capital to march forward, but many of Greater Boston’s more mature businesses that have built their legacy, anchoring themselves here years ago, are also looking for that top talent.

IT JOBS: NOW HIRING ALL TYPES

As the job market slowly continues to pick up, there is one industry that is booming… technology.

Start-up companies are popping up left and right, companies are expanding and opening new offices, and non-tech companies are opening new technology-driven divisions – with all of this industry growth, jobs are plentiful.

This IT “boom,” several years in the making, has caused hiring managers to think outside of the box when searching for the best new employees. Whether it be a new developer, software engineer or systems analyst, hiring is no longer a cut-and-dry process.

Companies are no longer searching solely for "techies" to fill their open positions. They are now seeking candidates from all educational and professional backgrounds to bring a well-rounded element to traditional IT positions.

“The greater technology’s societal impact, the more companies see the value of a blended background,” said Siamone Martin, John Leonard IT Staffing Consultant.

Martin, who joined John Leonard in July 2010, has been staffing IT positions for the past 8 years. He says that over the years he has seen a “pervasive shift” from companies seeking task-oriented, single-specialty individuals to seeking those with more varied skill sets.

Now he is beginning to see the same shift from the candidate side.

“People who never saw themselves as ‘techies’ are embracing different aspects of technology and morphing into that which they once swore off,” Martin said.
