The very first thing an organization does is to assess its current status and establish benchmarks across various measurements. Some organizations employ the assistance of a consultant to provide the necessary expertise in creating the appropriate infrastructure around which a comprehensive diversity action plan can be developed. Some initial steps would be:
- Ensure senior management buy into the need to develop an action plan
- Gather HR statistics to accurately measure current employee profile
- Observe general business dynamics to identify examples of inclusion or otherwise.
- Conduct one-on-one meetings with employees.
- Utilize exit interviews to get maybe a more "unfiltered" picture of the organizations perceived diversity & inclusion.
- Conduct an assessment survey (possibly with the help of a diversity consultant).
