Five Ways to Retain Top Talent During The 'Great Resignation'

Posted by Jennifer DeLucia on Nov 30, 2021 10:00:00 AM

Over the past 18 months, we’ve all read or at least seen the news about the 'Great Resignation'. Although job-hopping began many years in advance of the pandemic – the trend was predominantly found in younger employees. Recently, what has been particularly disruptive for organizations, is the rising resignation rate (over 20 percent since the pandemic began) of mid-level employees (ages 30-45). According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a whopping 4.4 million people voluntarily quit their jobs this past September and they are predicting the numbers will continue to increase. In fact, a recent PWC study found that 65 percent of employees were looking for a new job in 2021.

Why "Follow Your Passion" is the Worst Career Advice

Posted by Jennifer DeLucia on Feb 27, 2020 10:30:00 AM

Every day I see articles and career coaches encouraging people to “follow their passion” and if you do this or do that, “you will never have to work a day in your life”.  In my opinion, these people although probably coming from a good place, are offering unrealistic advice and are setting up today’s younger and more impressionable workers for failure. By propagating the myth that following your passions will make you happy and successful, we are cultivating a whole generation of individuals who are seeking something that is, for the most part, unattainable. Furthermore, by continuing to plant the seeds of unrealistic expectations, we are creating a frustrated and discontented workforce whose misplaced attitudes toward work will ultimately reflect poorly on their performance.

First off, I want to confess that although I have been working in a sales driven professional environment for over 20 years, I have never once referred to myself as a "sales person." In fact, I have to admit that I am not at all a sales person. So how have I been able to survive and thrive in a notoriously high stress sales environment for all of these years? Maybe it is because I love people...all people. Or maybe it is because I went to school for teaching and I truly enjoy helping others which has aided me in finding my stride in recruiting as a profession.
