Patent Paralegal Manager

Salary: $120K - $153K

5+ years of IP Paralegal experience or similar experience in a corporate setting required

A Boston law firm has an opening for an experienced Patent Paralegal Manager. In this role, you will be responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and overall quality of the services provided by the Patent Paralegals. This role will manage their direct reports while retaining a reduced caseload.

Responsibilities

  • Patent Paralegal Manager will manage the department’s workload and assignments
  • Oversee the department docket
  • Work with Director of Patent Paralegals to coordinate logistical support on all areas handled by patent paralegals, i.e. rule changes, procedural changes, implementation within the department, and communication to practice group and clients
  • Work with Director of Patent Paralegals and staff in connection with ongoing professional development and training within the department; train staff and conduct work product review; offer ongoing feedback to staff 
  • Work with Director of Patent Paralegals and Paralegal Trainer to update/develop training and instructional documentation and materials for the department
  • Handle the duty of disclosure/IDS work for a small distribution of clients
  • Work with Director of Patent Paralegals and staff in connection with performance-related issues, such as time management, accuracy, prioritization, and efficiency
  • Manage billable/non billable hour activities and overall staffing levels consistent with targeted production standards
  • Coordinate staffing coverage, including the review and approval of weekly time sheets
  • Participate in annual performance reviews and set annual salary and goals
  • Coordinate the hiring efforts with the Director of Patent Paralegals
  • Work closely with the Practice Groups, IP Services, Practice and Client Administration, IFD, and Firm Trainer in connection with practice initiatives that affect multiple departments
  • Coordinate with IT re: software updates/programs
  • Promote team environment
  • Promote/enforce/improve work standards
  • Participate in new hire orientations
  • Work with department attorney liaison to identify and work towards yearly department goals based on rule changes and/or attorney feedback

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required; 5+ years IP Paralegal experience or similar experience in a corporate setting
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of US patent practice (particularly the duty of disclosure), some knowledge of foreign patent practice, and strong knowledge of WGS procedures and processes
  • Experience with CPI, IPDAS, Elite, Microsoft Word, and Outlook
  • Ability to prioritize in a deadline-oriented, high-pressure environment
  • Ability to manage relationships and to motivate and lead groups of people
  • Good conflict resolution and organizational skills
  • Good judgment and the ability to be discreet and sensitive in all matters
