T-DH Residential Counselor Supervisor

A Boston nonprofit is seeking a T-DH Residential Counselor Supervisor. The Supervisor is responsible to lead the designated shift of line staff, providing all of the same duties as the Residential Counselor Specialist, but carrying the additional responsibility to ensure that all policies, protocols, and practices are aligned with expectations and to support staff throughout the shift.

Responsibilities

  • Residential Counselor Supervisor will follow the guidance and tone set by the Director, lead all activities on the floor, make decisions in the moment when necessary, and identify when to escalate matters or call-in additional support
  • Provide in the moment support, reflection, feedback, and redirection to staff on shift toward program culture and goals
  • Ensure shifts are filled and operations are safe for staff and guests and proactively handle last-minute shift call-outs
  • Model a positive, collaborative, professional, and respectful tone on the floor, illustrating clear and appropriate boundaries
  • Adhere to and reinforces procedures and guidelines, applying flexibility when warranted and in alignment with Director’s guidance
  • Complete shift reports and ensure the working environment is orderly and prepared for the next shift
  • Help to ensure an environment where women want to be to reduce the number of days/nights spent on the street
  • Apply a trauma-informed and person-centered approach to the work
  • Ensure women are meeting their basic needs for shelter, food, and clothing: creating a safe and comfortable sleeping environment and distribute meals and snacks, and ensure women have access to necessary clothing
  • Maintain an active presence within the shelter floor for safety checks and allows for women to know they are safe and can easily start a conversation or ask for something they may need
  • Provide a positive, professional, and respectful presence at all times, regardless of the difficult choices guests may make
  • Provide light-touch case management support through relationship and trust-building activities
  • Screen shelter guests at the door and provide them with safe and locked storage options for any drug paraphernalia or items that could be used as weapons
  • Ensure women who engage in high-risk behaviors outside of the shelter know how to do so as safely as possible

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s Degree or other post-high school education or training strongly preferred
  • 2+ years of experience working in human services with highly vulnerable populations
  • Experience with de-escalation techniques or crisis intervention
  • Training and experience in trauma-informed practices and harm-reduction principles
  • Lived experience of homelessness and/or recovery a plus
  • CPR and First AID certified preferred
  • Narcan trained or ability to become trained in first 2 weeks of the date of hire
  • Ability to communicate, work under pressure, and de-escalate difficult situations with a diverse population in a calm and respectful manner while using good judgment and the support of the rest of coworkers
  • Willingness to learn and understand the unique needs of women who have experienced homelessness, drug addiction, and trauma
  • Ability to be flexible and patient with emerging understandings and approaches to successfully operating the shelter in support of the women’s needs
